Episode 19: The northern lights with Nathan Lowell

Posted Jul 14, 2012 by bn

So if you go up north, or way down south, you can see curtains of light which shimmer across the sky. These are the northern lights and the southern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis and the Aurora Australis.

Long story short: Ions that come from the sun get stuck to magnetic field lines and flow towards the magnetic poles of the earth.

To help us out we’ve borrowed Nathan Lowell, author of the hit podiobook novel series involving the “Age of the Solar Clipper“, in which people travel between the stars, hauling cargo and emotional baggage. they also drink a lot of coffee.

He makes podcast versions of his novels, and they are pretty fun to listen to. If you’d like to try it out, why not start here?   alternatively you can purchase his books and read them in a hammock.

In other newsy news. we now have a FORUM! a place where we can all hang out and talk about physics and also my plans for world domination. click HERE to go there.

Also, we have a Store. I’m not going to lie, this podcast doesn’t cost all that much per month. but it does cost something. So I’ve started selling RAD T-Shirts (thanks, chelsea anderson!). If you wear them around, maybe people ask why you look so smart and then you can tell them about my titanium physicists.
